The Trouble of Genres

As a writer, I have a rather eclectic taste in what I enjoy reading and writing. Most of the time, I consider myself falling into the bracket of fantasy and romance, maybe a little in the noir; however, with interests and musings constantly changing, it can be difficult to sell myself to agents and readers as I'm not only 'one' thing.
I, S. J. Milne, am excited for future adventures in genres I have yet to attempt. (Though not something I'd publish under the same name, I excel at sad storylines, haikus, and Mills & Boons-style content.)
As readers, do you like following a writer with a wide range in their portfolio, or do you prefer someone with a focussed market who can launch book after book without worrying about whether you will enjoy the style?
