For an assessment, I had to write the opening chapters of a crime novel. Here's the prologue. Are you intrigued? Do you want to know more?

Sandbox Glitch

Prologue

In a world where technology defines society and the development of cyber-connection shapes extracurricular activities of all ages, an AI system has burst from a popular online FRAG game (free-to-play), evolving by attaching itself to living organisms in the real world. Since the incident seven months ago, there have been reports of individuals who exhibit video game characteristics - these people have come to be called “live gamers”. In a global attempt to trace these people, statistics revealed almost 15% of the planet’s population has progressed into this state.

PHOTO Live gamers have abilities that develop as they “level up”. There are multiple pathways to reaching a higher level, but most follow the notifications that appear through an AI-controlled cyber-alert. Unlike in a game, the “missions” are fairly straightforward, for example: earn a promotion, buy a new car, run 100 miles, etc. To check their progress, a live gamer has a Cyber Profile which is activated by touching the inside of their left wrist. Once activated a hologram will appear:

The information presented changes naturally as the live gamer: completes missions, collects points and experience, and utilises their stats in daily activities. Once a mission is completed, rewards are given in a variety of categories; these can be used, added to inventory or traded with other live gamers for points. In the event that a weapon (whether offensive or defensive) is received, the live gamer has discretion.

Since the real world is still adapting to the presence of live gamers there is still little in place to govern them, most become celebrities as there are many who idolise these incredible abilities.

But occasionally there will be a live gamer who uses their skills and level to cause harm to the world around them.
